Eunice Hindley
Coach 1978-2004: Cross Country, Indoor Track & Field,
& Outdoor Track & Field
Eunice Hindley has lived in Chepachet for the past 45 years with her husband Jay. Together they raised four children who each contributed to Ponaganset athletics: Brad and Mark Gould, and Jill and Eden Hindley.
While her children walked the hallways of Ponaganset, Eunice ruled the classroom. She taught seventh grade social studies for 21 years at Ponaganset Middle School.
Eunice Hindley began her coaching career at Ponaganset High School in 1978 as the head Women’s Cross Country and Outdoor Track and Field coach. In 1992 she became the head Indoor Track and Field coach when she helped launch a team with just three student-athletes.
Throughout her 26 years of coaching, Eunice earned two Rhode Island State Championships and 14 Division Titles and Class C Championships. She has been named Woonsocket Call Coach of the Year and celebrated six All-State athletes. Eunice was inducted into the Rhode Island Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004, the same year she retired. During her coaching legacy, she also served as a Rhode Island Interscholastic League Committee member.
Known for her enormous Suburban, no-excuse practices, and strict curfew policy, Eunice was an enthusiastic mentor who instilled so much pride in her athletes. She believed in commitment, effort, perseverance, pride, and dedication. Coach Hindley encouraged her athletes to work hard, believe in one’s self and focus on improvement.
Eunice once shared that greatest accomplishment has been the lifelong respect and friendships of her student-athletes and the time spent coaching her daughters on the Cross Country and Track and Field teams.
In addition to her contributions to PHS, Eunice served as a member on the Glocester Recreational Committee from 1980 to 2000. She now serves as a member of the Glocester Historical Society.
Eunice can still be found on Ponaganset’s trails and track helping to officiate championship meets. She’s the grandmother to Garrett, Ian, Grayden, Heidi, Will, Waylon, and Rebekah and enjoys watching and cheering them on in all their endeavors.
