Class of 1965
Ice Hockey, Baseball
In 1961 Ponaganset High School created its first hockey team and a young Steve Winsor jumped at the chance to play the sport he loved. When Steve entered his junior year in 1963, he was named co-captain and by the end of the season he was the top scorer for the Chieftains and was named All Suburban Second Team. Steve started his senior year giving Ponaganset an early Christmas present when he scored the game winning goal in the final minute against the previously undefeated and heavily favored Cranston East. He finished his senior year tied for high scorer in the entire suburban league, and was named First Team All Surburban and Second Team All State. This was something that just didn’t happen to a player in a small school with a young hockey program that mainly depended on the unreliability of the pond ice in front of their school for practice and scrimmages.
Since graduating in 1965, Steve volunteered as a Harmony firefighter for 35 yrs achieving the rank of lieutenant; enlisted 6 years in the RI National Guard/special forces as a paratrooper/green beret; continues to coach hockey programs from 1965 to the present, including Ponaganset Middle and High School, and has been operating SH Winsor Construction for 38 years. Steve lives in Glocester with his wife Kathy and they have two children, Seana and Stephan who are Ponaganset H.S and college graduates.
